Exchange the CEC enclosure I2C interface card assembly

Attention:
  • This is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur if microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If you were sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, the microcode and power boundaries have already been set.

Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the CEC enclosure I2C interface card assembly

About this task

Note: The CEC enclosure I2C interface card assembly FRU is a kit that contains the following two pieces:
  • I2C interface card with five cables permanently attached. This card is located at the front of the CEC enclosure.
  • I2C passive connector card which is a cable interposer between the internal ribbon cable and the external RJ-45 cable.

Procedure

  1. Use a replacement part with a valid DS8000® part number to ensure it has the proper firmware, VPD, and/or configuration to ensure it is compatible with the DS8000 service procedures. Attempting to use a generic POWER7® server FRU might fail and require next level of support to recover.
  2. All parts being removed must be marked or identified so they can be installed into their original locations.
    Note: Failure to do this can extend the service duration and may require next level of support assistance.
  3. Move the management console laptop from the service position Callout label 2 to the DC-UPS service position Callout label 1, as shown in Figure 1. Refer to Management console service positions (Model 961).

  4. Push the now empty management console tray Callout label 2 fully into the rack. See Figure 1. This allows access to the top and rear of the CEC enclosure.
  5. Use the CEC enclosure front and rear blue identify LEDs to determine the CEC enclosure to be repaired. Both blue LEDs should be solidly lit.
    • CEC control panel blue identify LED Callout label C, as shown in Figure 2
    • CEC enclosure rear blue identify LED Callout label 17, as shown in Figure 3
    Note: If both the front and rear CEC enclosure identify LEDs are not lit, use the location code listed in the serviceable event FRU list. See MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.

  6. Verify the CEC enclosure is in the power-off state. See Figure 4.
    1. At the rear of the CEC enclosure, view both CEC enclosure power supply DC GOOD LEDs.
    2. Are both DC GOOD (output) LEDs Callout label 2 blinking?

  7. Disconnect the power cables (E1-J1 and E2-J1) from the CEC with the DC Good LEDs blinking. See Figure 5.
    Note: The CEC enclosure power supply LEDs continue to blink for up to 20 seconds while internal power is discharged.
    1. Each power cable is looped once around the CEC enclosure power supply handle and secured with a cable tie.
    2. Remove the cable tie, unplug the cable and unwrap it from the handle.

  8. Observe the CEC enclosure control panel green power present icon Callout label B. See Figure 6.
    • If it is off, go to the next step.
    • If it is slow blinking, the CEC enclosure is still in the power-off state. DO NOT CONTINUE. Ensure that you have unplugged the power cables.

  9. At the upper left rear of the CEC enclosure, disconnect the two I2C cables (P1-C1-C1-T1 and P1-C1-C1-T2). See Figure 5.
  10. At the front of the CEC enclosure, remove the two screws Callout label A (if present) that secure the CEC enclosure Callout label B to the rack. See Figure 7.

  11. Pull the CEC enclosure fully out to the service position.
    1. Hold the CEC enclosure release latches Callout label A down on both the left and right sides, and pull the CEC enclosure full out. See Figure 8.
    2. Ensure both slide rails both latch in the full out position.

  12. Remove the CEC enclosure front cover. See Figure 9.
    1. The front cover is held on by two post spring clips on the left and right ends.
    2. Gently pull on the lower lip of the cover at the left and then right ends.
      Note: Do not pull in the middle of the cover.

  13. Remove the CEC enclosure service access cover. See Figure 10.
    1. Loosen the two thumbscrews Callout label A located at the back of the cover.
    2. Slide the cover toward the back of the CEC enclosure. When the front of the service access cover has cleared the upper frame ledge, lift the cover up and off the CEC enclosure.

  14. Remove the ribbon cable from the I2C passive connector card Callout label 1. See Figure 11. Release the ribbon cable Callout label 2 fully from the card connector and from the vertical retention slot Callout label 3.

  15. Remove the I2C passive connector card from the CEC enclosure.
  16. Remove the control panel. See Figure 12.
    1. Press the blue release tab to the left and pull the control panel out to the service position.
    2. Remove the control panel by pressing the locking tabs Callout label C located on either side of the panel, grasping the edges of the panel, and pulling the panel out of its bay.
    3. Disconnect the control-panel signal cable Callout label B and its related USB Callout label B cable from the back of the control panel.

  17. Remove the I2C interface card (P1-C19).
    1. The I2C interface card Callout label 2 is to the right of the memory cards. See Figure 13.

    2. The I2C interface card has five cable ends. See Figure 14. Trace each cable to its destination and disconnect it from that connector.
      • Callout label 2 control panel USB and Callout label 3, control panel signal cables were already disconnected in a prior step.
      • Callout label 5, was already released from I2C passive card in a prior step.
      • Callout label 6, release it from the system backplane. See Figure 15, Control Panel Signal.
      • Callout label 1, release it from the system backplane. See Figure 15, Control Panel USB.

    3. Press the blue release latch Callout label 2 and lift the card out of the slot. See Figure 13.

Install the CEC enclosure I2C interface card assembly

Procedure

  1. Install the I2C interface card (P1-C19).
    1. Install the card Callout label 1 into it's slot. Push down until the blue latch Callout label 2 snaps into place. See Figure 13.
    2. Route the control panel cable bundle Callout label 2 Callout label 3 through the control panel opening so that the cables connectors stick out the front of the CEC enclosure. See Figure 14.
    3. Connect the control panel USB cable Callout label 1 Figure 14 to the system backplane (Figure 15).
    4. Connect the control panel signal cable Callout label 6 Figure 14 to the control panel USB connector (Figure 15) on the system backplane.
    5. Route the I2C cable Callout label 5 Figure 14 to the I2C passive card location at the right rear of the CEC enclosure (Figure 11).
  2. Install the I2C passive connector card. See Figure 11.
    1. Insert the ribbon cable Callout label 3 into the card connector Callout label 2. Ensure the cable passes through the two vertical slots Callout label 3 in the card.
    2. Install the card into the slot.
  3. Install the control panel. See Figure 12.
    1. Connect the control-panel signal cable Callout label B and its related USB Callout label B cable to the rear of the control panel.
    2. Install the control panel assembly by sliding it into the CEC enclosure until the locking tabs Callout label B located on either side of the panel snap into place.
    3. Slide the control panel fully into the CEC enclosure until the blue latch snaps into place.
  4. Install the service access cover. See Figure 10.
    1. Place the service access cover on top of the system, about 25 mm (1 in.) from the upper chassis ledge.
    2. Hold the service access cover against the system unit and slide it toward the front of the system. The tabs of the service access cover slide beneath the upper chassis ledge.
    3. Align the two thumbscrews Callout label A located on the back of the service access cover with the two holes on the back of the system chassis.
    4. Tighten the thumbscrews to secure the service access cover.
  5. Install the front cover. See Figure 1.
  6. Push the CEC enclosure fully into the rack until it latches in place.
  7. If the CEC enclosure was held in place with screws, install them now.
  8. At the upper left rear of the CEC enclosure, connect the two I2C cables (P1-C1-C1-T1 and P1-C1-C1-T2). See Figure 16.
  9. Connect the power cables (E1-J1, E2-J1) to both CEC enclosure power supplies. See Figure 4.
    Note: The power supply "DC Good" green LED should blink. See Figure 4.
    1. Loop the power cable around the power supply handle and connect it.
    2. Secure the cable with the cable tie.

    Is the DC Good green LED blinking on one or both power supplies?

    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, ensure the power cables are properly connected. If no cable problem is found, call the next level of support.

  10. Wait up to 5 minutes for the CEC enclosure control panel green power present LED [B] to slow blink, as shown in Figure 2.
    Note: This ensures the CEC enclosure is in the power-off state.

    Is the green LED blinking?

    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, ensure the CEC enclosure power supplies are fully seated. The possible failing FRUs are the CEC enclosure system backplane, I2C interface card and cables, and control panel. You can also call the next level of support.
  11. Return the management console laptop to the standard service position Callout label B on the slide-out tray. See Figure 1.
    1. Slide the empty management console tray Callout label B out to the service position.
    2. Move the laptop assembly from the DC-UPS service position Callout label A to the standard service position Callout label B. Carefully route the cable bundle.
    3. Push the DC-UPS service position rails fully in.
