Exchange the PPS booster power module

Before you begin

Attention:

This is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur if microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
If you were sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, the microcode and power boundaries have already been set.
If you were not sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.

Notes:

All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the booster power module

Procedure

If this rack is a machine type 2107 (not 242x), then see MAP2512 to ensure the 5/12V DDM power module's heavy black power cables are properly crimped into the cable connectors before continuing.
You must disconnect the J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable and reconnect the , (PPS to RPC cables), and PPS-PPS communication cable in the proper sequence to prevent possible problems to the other PPS. Ensure you carefully follow the steps in this procedure.
To locate this FRU, do one of the following and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
- If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
  Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
- Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
- If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
- The "light path" identify LEDs are a hierarchy of LEDs that can identify the rack, enclosure, FRU, and even the FRU connector to which a cable is connected.
- For more information, refer to MAP1240 Locating FRUs using identify indicators.
Do not use the PPS FAULT LED indicator to identify the PPS being repaired.
- When the failing PPS is being repaired, the PPS FAULT LED indicator on the working PPS in the same rack might be on solid.
  The working PPS is indicating that the PPS being repaired is not available for use.
- Use the FRU Identify LED indicator to identify the PPS being repaired.

If this is an expansion rack and it has old level sheet metal, the sheet metal baffle to the left of the gate and at the bottom of the storage enclosure chassis might need to be removed to allow the gate to swing open. Remove the two screws that fasten the baffle to the 19" rack mount vertical rails. If the baffle is the new level sheet metal, it has a flexible plastic cutout that bends out of the way when the gate is swung open.

Open the 208VDC bus bar gate to the service position by removing the two screws and swinging it open to the left. See Figure 3.

Have the customer remove power to the PPS that is being replaced. See Figure 4.
1. Instruct the customer to switch off the circuit breaker that supplies mainline ac voltage to the power receptacle for the mainline power cable you are replacing.
  Attention: Use lockout and tagout procedures as defined in the Electrical Safety for IBM® Customer Engineers.
2. Observe the front of the PPS. Is the AC INPUT GOOD LED indicator off?
  - Yes, the customer has removed power from the correct PPS. Continue at the next step.
  - No, stop. The customer has not removed power from the correct PPS.
    1. Determine which PPS the customer has removed power from.
    2. Have the customer restore power to the PPS. The PPS may not power back on fully.
    3. Observe the LED indicators on the front of both PPSs with a PPS that is fully powered on. If the PPS did not power on fully, you will need to do a pseudo repair of the PPS to power it on. A pseudo repair of the PPS means that you use the normal FRU replacement procedures, but you do not replace or even disconnect the PPS cables. Refer to MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
    4. After the PPS is powered back on, return to this step and have the customer switch off the circuit breaker to the proper PPS.
Remove power and mainline power cord from the PPS.
1. At the PPS, on the ac input power module, set the CB00 switch to off (down).
2. Disconnect the mainline power cord from the ac input power module. Push the two release levers .

At the rear of the PPS that does not contain the module that is being replaced, disconnect the J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module (see Figure 5).
Notes:
1. Disconnecting the cable from the PPS that does not contain the module that is being replaced will protect that PPS. Then, when the other end of the cable is disconnected from the PPS containing the module that is being replaced, no pins inside that connector will be able to touch ground and shut down the PPS that does not contain the module that is being replaced.
2. This removes the remaining logic power from the PPS containing the module that is being replaced; all PPS LEDs should now be off.

At the rear of the PPS containing the module that is being replaced, disconnect the J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module.
Disconnect the cables from the booster power module.
If removing the booster power module from PPS2 (lower PPS) slide the PPS forward into the service position:
1. Disconnect the remaining cables from the rear of the PPS.
2. Remove the green/yellow ground wire from the PPS.
3. Remove the cable ties securing the mainline power cable to PPS2 (lower PPS). Remove the screw securing the mainline power cable bracket, and then remove the mainline power cable bracket . See Figure 6.

4. At the front of the rack, remove the eight screws that fasten the PPS chassis to the rack . See Figure 7.

5. Slide the entire primary power supply forward just far enough to allow you to remove the sequencer module. Figure 8 shows the PPS fully forward.

Remove the screws from the power sequencer module and then slide the module out. See Figure 9.
- You might need to remove one or more cable routing brackets from the rear of the frame so that there is enough clearance. Each bracket is held by two screws that only need to be loosened, not removed.
- You may need to rotate the module it to the vertical position to fully remove it from the rack.

Install the booster power module

Procedure

You must connect the , (PPS to RPC cables), and PPS-PPS communication cable in the proper sequence to prevent possible problems to the other PPS. Ensure you carefully follow the steps in this procedure.
Install the booster power module
1. At the rear of the rack, install the new booster power module.
2. Secure the two silver thumbscrews.
Do this step if the PPS was put in the service position. See Figure 10.
1. At the front of the rack, press the slide release levers and then slide the PPS chassis fully into the rack.
2. Install the eight black hex head screws that fasten the PPS chassis to the rack.
3. Reinstall the mainline power cable bracket.

Do this step if the PPS was put in the service position. At the rear of the PPS, connect the and cables now to the sequence module. See Figure 5 above.
Do not connect the J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable or mainline power cable until later steps.
1. Connect the remaining rear cables.
2. Install the green/yellow ground wire, ensuring all the contact washers are in place.
3. Ensure the enable/disable switches on the rear modules are in the on position (up).
4. Reinstall any cable routing bracket that was removed.
Connect all but two rear cables.
1. Do not connect the PPS sequencer module (bottom right) J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable or mainline power cord until directed in later steps.
2. Connect the remaining rear cables.
3. Install the green/yellow ground wire, ensuring all the contact washers are in place.
4. Ensure the enable/disable switches on the rear modules are in the on position (up).
5. Reinstall any cable routing bracket that was removed.
At the rear of the PPS containing the replacement module, connect the J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module.
At the rear of the PPS that does not contain the replacement module, connect the J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module.
Note: One or more of the PPS LEDs may now be lit on the PPS containing the replacement module.
Connect power.
1. Connect the mainline power cord to the ac input power module. Secure it with both release levers .
2. Set the CB00 switch to on (up) . See Figure 4.
3. Instruct the customer to switch on the mainline circuit breaker that supplies mainline ac voltage to the power receptacle for the primary power supply you are replacing.
Reinstall any cable routing bracket that was removed.
Return the 208VDC bus bar gate to the closed position.
1. Pivot the 208VDC bus bar gate closed, being careful that both mainline power cables lie in the space between the two 208VDC bus bars.
2. Install the two screws.
Note: If this is an expansion rack and the sheet metal baffle to the left of the gate was removed, reinstall it now with the two screws.
