Exchange the battery module enclosure

Before you begin

Attention:
  • This is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur if microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If you were sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, the microcode and power boundaries have already been set.
  • If you were not sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.
  • You are using this procedure to exchange a battery FRU (battery module set or battery module enclosure). Unless specifically directed by a MAP or next level of support, you must actually replace the FRU with a new FRU. Performing a "pseudo-repair" with an out-of-date or defective FRU, or closing a serviceable event without exchanging the FRU, can result in data loss.

Remove the battery module enclosure

About this task

Attention: The three battery modules that will be removed from the old battery module enclosure must be installed in the same exact locations in the new battery module enclosure. The microcode checks the information for each battery module position and may report a false "last charge date more than 8 months," or similar error, if the battery modules are swapped.

Procedure

  1. To locate this FRU, do one of the following and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
      Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
  2. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
    • The "light path" identify LEDs are a hierarchy of LEDs that can identify the rack, enclosure, FRU, and even the FRU connector to which a cable is connected.
    • For more information, refer to MAP1240 Locating FRUs using identify indicators.
  3. If this is an expansion rack and it has old level sheet metal, the sheet metal baffle Callout label 2 to the left of the gate and at the bottom of the storage enclosure chassis might need to be removed to allow the gate to swing open. Remove the two screws Callout label 1 that fasten the baffle to the 19" rack mount vertical rails. If the baffle is the new level sheet metal, it has a flexible plastic cutout that bends out of the way when the gate is swung open.

  4. Remove the two screws Callout label 1 and open the 208VDC bus bar gate to the service position.

  5. At the rear of the rack, set the CB0 and CB1 switches to off (down) on the battery module enclosure.
  6. You must record the location of each battery module in the battery module enclosure.
    Note: The three battery modules that will be removed from the old battery module enclosure must be installed in the same exact locations in the new battery module enclosure. The microcode checks the information for each battery module position and may report a false "last charge date more than 8 months," or similar error, if the battery modules are swapped.
  7. At the front of the rack, remove the three battery modules from the battery module enclosure.
    1. Loosen the thumbscrew at the top of each battery module Callout label 1.

      Tighten each thumbscrew.

    2. Gently slide the modules out of their slots. Be ready to support the weight of each module as the module is being removed.

  8. At the rear of the rack, unplug all the cables (except the J7 fan cable) from the battery module enclosure.
  9. At the rear of the rack, disconnect the yellow/green ground wire from the rack frame. Be careful to keep any serrated washers used for good contact.
  10. At the front of the rack, remove the two rack mount screws.
  11. Slide the battery module enclosure out the front of the rack.

Install the battery module enclosure

Procedure

  1. Ensure that CB0 and CB1 switches are set to off (down) on the new battery module enclosure.
  2. Slide the enclosure into the front of the rack.
  3. Screw in the two rack mount screws to secure the enclosure.
  4. At the rear of the rack, connect all cable including the yellow/green ground wire.
  5. At the front of the rack, ensure you install the three battery modules in their original locations.
  6. At the rear of the rack, set CB0 and CB1 switches to on (up).
  7. Close the 208VDC bus bar gate and install the two screws.
    Note: If this is an expansion rack and the sheetmetal baffle to the left of the gate was removed, reinstall it now with the two screws.
  8. Exit this service information center parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
