Exchange the battery module set

Before you begin

Attention:
  • This is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur if microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If you were sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, the microcode and power boundaries have already been set.
  • If you were not sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • The battery module set contains three battery modules. Each battery module does not exceed the weight to be replaced by a single service provider. All three battery modules must be replaced as a set.
  • You are using this procedure to exchange a battery FRU (battery module set or battery module enclosure). Unless specifically directed by a MAP or next level of support, you must actually replace the FRU with a new FRU. Performing a "pseudo-repair" with an out-of-date or defective FRU, or closing a serviceable event without exchanging the FRU, can result in data loss.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the battery module set

Procedure

  1. The old battery modules being replaced must be returned in the same packing material and strapped to the pallet that the new modules arrived on.
  2. To locate this FRU, do one of the following and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
      Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
  3. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
    • The "light path" identify LEDs are a hierarchy of LEDs that can identify the rack, enclosure, FRU, and even the FRU connector to which a cable is connected.

  4. To gain full access, unfasten Callout label 1 and then rotate the needed power distribution units (PDUs) away from the rear of the rack.

  5. Are any of the following cables either unplugged or missing? See Figure 2.
    • Callout label 1, Callout label 2 are PPS to battery module enclosure I2C signal cables.
    • Callout label 3, Callout label 4 are battery enclosure to the 208VDC bus bar cables.
    • Callout label 5, Callout label 6 are PPS to battery module enclosure charging cables.
    • Yes, do not replace the battery module set. Instead, go to the next step, and when you are directed to replace each battery module, connect the disconnected cable(s). Most likely this error was caused by the cable, not the battery module set.
    • No, go to the next step.

  6. Set the CB0 and CB1 switches to Off (down) on the battery module enclosure.
  7. Loosen the thumbscrew at the top of each battery module Callout label 1.

    Tighten each thumbscrew.

  8. Gently slide each battery module unit out of its slot. Support the weight of the module when the module is near being removed.

Install the battery module set

Procedure

  1. Slide each battery module into its slot.
  2. Tighten each thumbscrew.
  3. At the rear of the rack, set CB0 and CB1 switches to on (up).
  4. Rotate and fasten the power distribution units (PDU) to the normal position.
  5. You must return the old battery modules in the packing materials and strapped on the pallet the new battery modules arrived on.
    1. If the packing materials are damaged, you must order a new packing materials kit (FRU P/N 45W9747) to ensure the batteries are properly protected.
    2. There are two versions of the packing materials, one with the modules standing up, the other with them laying on their sides. You must pack the old modules in the proper orientation.
  6. You must strap the box to the pallet for return with the field strapping kit (FRU P/N 92X9720). The field strapping kit should be included in the packing materials; if not, order it separately.
  7. This FRU contains lead/acid gel batteries that must be properly disposed of. See return instructions in the FRU packaging or use your local procedures.
