Exchange the CEC enclosure memory DIMM

Before you begin

Attention:
  • This is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur if microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If you were sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, the microcode and power boundaries have already been set.
  • If you were not sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the memory DIMM

Procedure

  1. Verify that the CEC enclosure is in the "power off" state before you continue. (The CEC enclosure should already be in the power off state.)
    Note: If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator LED, it is no longer lit.

    If you have not already located the FRU to be replaced, use the location code listed in the serviceable event FRU list. See MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.

  2. At the rear of the storage facility, view both CEC enclosure power supplies.

    Are both DC GOOD LEDs flashing?

  3. Remove all power from the CEC enclosure.
    • At the rear of the CEC enclosure, disconnect the power input cables Callout label A to both CEC enclosure power supplies.
    • At the CEC enclosure control panel, observe the green Power® Present icon, beneath the white Power button.
      • If it is slow flashing, the CEC enclosure is still in the power-off state. DO NOT CONTINUE. Ensure that you have unplugged the power cables.
      • If it is off, go to the next step.

  4. At the front of the CEC enclosure, remove the control panel by pressing the locking tabs Callout label A located on either side of the panel, grasping the edges of the panel, and pulling it out of its bay Callout label B.

  5. Remove all the system processor voltage cards:
    1. Squeeze the top of the latch to release it.
    2. Rotate the latch out and then down.
    3. Grasp the pull ring and slowly pull the system processor voltage card out of the enclosure.
    Attention: Pulling the system processor voltage card out of the card enclosure requires a large amount of force. The system processor voltage card is of substantial weight, so grasp it firmly when it is free of the card enclosure.

  6. Unlock the system processor backplane assembly Callout label A then pull it out of the CEC enclosure Callout label B using both hands. See Figure 5.
    Attention: The system backplane assembly weighs 35 lbs and should not be pulled out using the blue lever. Grasp the backplane assembly firmly with both hands when it is free of the system.

  7. Place the system processor backplane assembly on an acceptable electrostatic discharge (ESD) surface.
  8. To identify the failing memory DIMM to replace, do one of the following:
    • If you have a FRU location code from a serviceable event FRU list, refer to Figure 6 and then continue at the next step.

      Memory module location is P2-Cx-Cy where:

      x = System processor card slot 1 or slot 2
      y = Memory DIMM slot 1 thru 12 as shown

      Notes:
      1. First quad of memory modules is plugged into memory module slots P2-Cx-C3, P2-Cx-C6, P2-Cx-C9, and P2-Cx-C12.
      2. Second quad of memory modules is plugged into memory module slots P2-Cx-C2, P2-Cx-C5, P2-Cx-C8, and P2-Cx-C11.
      3. Third quad of memory modules is plugged into memory module slots P2-Cx-C1, P2-Cx-C4, P2-Cx-C7, and P2-Cx-C10.
    • If you do not have a memory DIMM location code from a serviceable event FRU list or other isolation process, and you are removing the processor backplane because of a system failure, look at the LEDs Callout label A located on top of the system processor assemblies to identify the location of the failing DIMMs. To illuminate the location LED for the failing DIMM, press the LED actuator button Callout label B as shown in the following figure.
      Attention: The actuator button must be used within 20 minutes after the system backplane assembly is removed from the system. The assembly retains the energy to light the LEDs for 40 seconds after the actuator button has been pressed.

  9. Remove the system processor card assembly:
    1. Unscrew the two blue thumbscrews, pivot the processor alignment face plate out, and then remove it.

    2. Pull the locking knobs Callout label A out to the unlocked position.
    3. Push the locking arms Callout label B down and out to unlock the processor card assembly.
    4. Lift the processor card assembly Callout label C out of the system backplane assembly.

  10. Remove the system processor assembly cover. See Figure 10.
    1. Unlock the two retaining knobs Callout label A on the system processor assembly.
    2. Slide the cover Callout label B back.
    3. Lift the cover off of the assembly.

  11. Remove the memory DIMMs. See Figure 11.
    1. Remove the mylar cover, if installed, that is covering the memory DIMMs.
    2. Locate the memory DIMM that you want to remove.
    3. Unlock the memory DIMM by pushing the connector tabs Callout label A out and then down. The tabs' lever action forces the memory DIMM Callout label B out of the connector.
    4. Lift the memory DIMM out of the connector.

Install the memory DIMM

About this task

Note: It is not recommended that you attempt a pseudo repair of the memory DIMM to be replaced. For example, do not leave the original failing FRU installed. If you choose to do this to further isolate the failure, you must move the memory DIMM from the failing slot to a different slot.

On power up, the firmware checks the serial number of the DIMM in each slot that reported a failure and only attempts to reconfigure the slot to active if the memory DIMM serial number has changed.

Procedure

  1. Install the memory DIMMs. See Figure 12.
    1. Ensure that the connector locking tabs Callout label A are pushed out into the unlocked position before installing a new memory DIMM
    2. Carefully grasp the memory DIMM Callout label B along two edges and align it with the connector.
      Attention: Memory DIMMs are keyed to prevent a DIMM from being installed improperly. Note the locations of the key tabs within the DIMM connector before attempting to install the DIMM.
    3. Push the memory DIMM firmly into the connector until the connector locking tabs engage.
    4. If you are installing any tall DIMMs, place the mylar cover over the DIMMs in the processor card to prevent the DIMMs from contacting the lid.
      Note: If you replace tall DIMMs with regular-sized modules, remove the mylar cover. Failing to remove the mylar cover might restrict airflow in the unit.

  2. Install the system processor assembly cover Callout label B and then tighten the two retention knobs Callout label A.

  3. Install the system processor card assembly. See Figure 14,
    1. Place the processor assembly Callout label A into the system backplane assembly, and then lock it into place with the locking arms Callout label B.
    2. Press the blue locking knobs Callout label C in to the locked position.

    3. Install the processor alignment face plate, and then tighten the two blue thumbscrews.

  4. Carefully slide the processor backplane assembly into the processor enclosure. Press it into place, and then lock it with the locking arm.
  5. Replace the system processor voltage card by doing the following:
    1. Ensure that the system processor voltage card latch is rotated out to the unlocked position.
    2. Carefully grasp the system processor voltage card and slide it into the enclosure.
    3. When the system processor voltage card is almost all the way into the card enclosure, rotate the latch up into the locked position.
  6. Carefully slide the control panel into the control panel bay until you feel the locking tabs lock in place.
  7. At the rear of the CEC enclosure, connect the power input cable to both CEC enclosure power supplies.
  8. Ensure that the CEC enclosure is in the power-off state before you continue. At the CEC enclosure control panel, wait for the green Power Present icon, beneath the white Power button to slow blink, and then continue the repair.
  9. Exit this service information center parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
