Exchange the storage enclosure backplane

Before you begin

Attention:

This is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur if microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
If you were sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, the microcode and power boundaries have already been set.
If you were not sent here by a serviceable event FRU repair, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.

Notes:

All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the storage enclosure backplane

About this task

Note: Ensure you have been directed here by a management console guided FRU replacement procedure. The FC-AL fabric for this and the directly associated storage enclosures must be in the proper state to protect the customer from data loss.

Procedure

To locate this FRU, do one of the following and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
- If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
  Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
- Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
- If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
- The "light path" identify LEDs are a hierarchy of LEDs that can identify the rack, enclosure, FRU, and even the FRU connector to which a cable is connected.
- For more information, refer to MAP1240 Locating FRUs using identify indicators.
Each disk drive module (DDM) , Fibre Channel interface card (FCIC) , and FC-AL cable must be installed in the exact same position in the new storage enclosure. See Figure 1.
Observe the cable labeling to ensure you will be able to reconnect the cables correctly. Disconnect the FC-AL cables from the two Fibre Channel interface cards (FCIC). Squeeze the top of the FC-AL cable connector to release it from the FCIC card . See Figure 1.

Note: There are four FC-AL cables if this is the last storage enclosure in this group. There are eight FC-AL cables if this is not the last storage enclosure in this group.
Remove each DDM and FCIC card from the storage enclosure and set in a safe place. You must ensure each one will be plugged in the same position in the new storage enclosure. It is recommended you write down the serial number and position of each part prior to removing them. See Figure 1.
Note: For help removing the DDM and FCIC card FRUs, reference:
- Exchange the disk drive module
- Exchange the Fibre Channel interface card (FCIC)
Remove the four screws fastening the storage enclosure backplane to the rack mount rails and then remove the storage enclosure backplane. See Figure 2.
In the storage enclosure position that is now empty, pivot the sheet metal baffle down into the closed position and ensure it is latched on both sides. This ensures the remaining storage enclosures maintain adequate cooling air flow. See Figure 2.

Remove the four T10 Torx screws from the sides of the storage enclosure, and then remove the perforated metal cover. See Figure 3.

Remove the T10 Torx screws that fasten the backplane to the chassis and then remove the backplane.

Install the storage enclosure backplane

Procedure

Use the two guide pins on the chassis to carefully align the storage enclosure backplane as it is placed on the chassis. Then, install the screws.
Install the perforated sheet metal cover with the four screws.
Unlatch the sheet metal air flap so it can swing to the up position. Install the new storage enclosure backplane in the rack and fasten it with the four screws.
Install each disk drive module (DDM) and Fibre Channel interface card (FCIC) in the exact same position as it was in the old storage enclosure.
Install each FC-AL cable in the exact same position as it was in the old storage enclosure.
