MAP4370 CEC enclosure control panel does not show a normal display

This procedure provides guidance on how to resolve the situation where the CEC enclosure control panel does not show a normal display.

About this task

The CEC enclosure control panel display problem may be as a result of a hang condition, a failing hardware, or when the panel was left in an abnormal state by previous panel actions.

MAP4370 Section-1

Procedure

  1. Is the affected CEC enclosure in a 242x model 961 (8205-E6C or 8205-E6D)?
    • Yes, continue with step 2.
    • No, continue with step 3.
  2. For model 961, you perform a pseudo repair of the CEC enclosure control panel to reset the service processor.
    • A pseudo repair means you use the normal procedures to replace the FRU, but you do not actually exchange the FRU.
    • If a pseudo repair does not result in a normal control panel display, replace the CEC enclosure control panel, location Un-D1.
    • Exit this MAP and refer to MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
  3. For model 941 or 951, does the CEC enclosure Control Panel problem appear to be due to a faulty display? For example, missing characters, missing display segments.
    • Yes, replace the control panel.

      Use the HMC GUI and click Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Exchange Parts > Exchange CEC Components > Show FRUs > Exchange FRU. Then exit this MAP.

    • No, continue with the next step.
  4. Perform the following steps to reset the Control Panel:
    1. Access ASMI on the Storage Facility System. Refer to MAP6F00 Accessing the ASMI.
    2. Logon to ASMI with userid: celogin and password: FipSce
    3. Select Concurrent Maintenance / Control Panel.
    4. Set the Action to Remove and click Continue.
    5. Select Save Settings.
    6. Go to MAP4110 Exchange the CEC enclosure control panel (concurrent) for instructions on how to unplug and then replug the CEC enclosure control panel.
    7. Return to ASMI and select Concurrent Maintenance / Control Panel.
    8. Set the Action to Install and click Continue.
    9. Select Save Settings.
  5. Is the problem now resolved?
    • Yes, this ends the procedure.
    • No, continue with the next step.
  6. Reset the service processor on the CEC enclosure that has the faulty display. Use MAP4810 Resetting the service processor (FSP). Return here when the service processor has been reset.
  7. Is the problem now resolved?
    • Yes, go to step 7
    • No, continue with the next step.
  8. Repeat step 2, but install a new control panel. Is the problem now resolved?
    • Yes, continue with the next step.
    • No, the possible remaining FRUs are the Service Processor Card and the CEC enclosure I/O backplane assembly. Either use the Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Exchange Parts option to replace the FRUs or contact your next level of support.
  9. Find the state that applies:
    • The CEC enclosure is powered off, use Service Utilities to power on the CEC enclosure and resume the LPARs. This ends the procedure.
    • The CEC enclosure is powered on, complete all other repairs, then select Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Storage Facility Power Control to power on the storage facility.
  10. Did you need to power off the CEC enclosure as described in Section-3 of MAP4810.
    • Yes, use Service Utilities to Power on the CEC enclosure and resume the LPARs. This ends the procedure.
    • No, complete all other repairs, then select Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Service Utilities > Storage Facility Power Control to power on the storage facility.
