MAP4240 888 error code on HMC LPAR virtual control panel

An 888 suggests that either a hardware or software problem has been detected and a diagnostic message is ready to be read. The next level of support will be called as they may have the additional information and access authority to do problem isolation and resolution.

Procedure

Perform the following steps to record the information contained in the 888 message and then contact your next level of support.
1. Wait until the 888 is displayed.
2. Record in sequence each code that is displayed after the 888 goes away.
3. Stop recording when the 888 reappears. Separate each code recorded with a blank space.
Find the first code recorded after the 888:
- 102, this is a Type 102 error, go to step 3.
- 103, this is a Type 103 error that occurs when a hardware error is detected, go to step 4.
Do the following to determine the content of the type 102 message. The Type 102 code sequence is: 888-102-RRR-SSS-xxx.
- 102 = Message type
- RRR = AIX crash progress codes
- SSS = Dump progress indicators (dump status codes)
- xxx = Additional codes (optional)
Are there additional codes following the Dump status code?
- Yes, this message also has a type 103 message included in it, go to step 4.
- No, contact your next level of support. The software on the CEC disk drives might be corrupt. You might be asked to use MAP4020 Hard disk drive build process for both boot drives in a storage facility image LPAR to reload the CEC software.
Do the following to determine the content of the Type 103 message. The Type 103 code sequence is: 888-102-XXX-YYY.
- 103 = Message type
- XXX-YYY = SRN
Find the SRN in the SRN and perform the indicated action.
Note: The only way to recover from an 888 type of halt is to power cycle the CEC enclosure. If the SRN repair does not do that, continue to step 5.
Power cycle the CEC enclosure by doing a "pseudo" FRU replace of the CEC enclosure fan. Do not actually remove or replace any parts, just use the process to safely power off and on the CEC enclosure. Use the Exchange FRU option on the HMC, reference MAP1215 Replace a FRU. If the CEC still hangs with 888, go to the next step.
Contact your next level of support. They may need to use remote access to run LPAR AIX command line online diagnostics for all resources to try to generate an SRN to repair.
