Setting the date, time, and customer network connection

Before you begin

Attention: The actions in this section include setting a time zone on the HMC. The time zone must be set before powering on the storage facility for the first time. A valid time zone setting is critical for proper operation.

Procedure

  1. Select one of the following conditions:
    • You are installing the first storage facility in this storage complex, and are configuring the internal management console, MC 1 (primary). Go to step 4.
    • You are installing the second storage facility in this storage complex and are configuring the internal management console, MC 2 (secondary). Go to step 2.
  2. At MC 1, display the existing private network address range.
    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management.
    2. In the right work area, go to the Operations section and click View Network Topology.
    3. In the right section of the Network Topology window (Figure 1) notice the IP address displayed in the Hostname field for an LPAR.
    4. Refer to Table 1 to determine the private network address range that is active.
      Note: The default address range is 172.16.xx.xx / 172.17.xx.xx. If the customer's network address range conflicts with the default private network address range, then they would have selected one address from the three optional address ranges (Table 1). The customer would have indicated which range on the Management console network settings work sheet from the IBM® DS8870 Introduction and Planning Guide.

  3. Refer to the Management console network settings work sheet you were given for the storage facility you are installing (Figure 2 shows an example). Are the private network address ranges for MC 1 and MC 2 the same?
    • Yes, go to step 4.
    • No, stop this installation. The private network address range for MC 2 must be the same as for MC 1. Ask the customer to update the work sheet as needed and then return to step 1.

  4. Check the HMC TCP/IP address selected on the Management console network settings work sheet provided by the customer. This is the address to be assigned to the HMC network port (eth2) for connection to the customer network.

    Is the address in either of the following ranges?

    172.16.0.0 - 172.16.255.255 or 172.17.0.0 - 172.17.255.255

    • No, go to step 6 (No TCP/IP address conflicts are expected) .
    • Yes, go to step 5.
  5. There is the potential of an address conflict between the customer networks and the DS8000® private networks. Contact your next level of support. The next level of support will assist you in converting the private network (gray and black) address ranges to one of the optional addresses that the customer has selected on the "Management console network settings work sheet". They have a special procedure to allow this network address conversion to occur during an installation.

    Refer to MAP7005 Determining which private network address range is selected to ensure that the address range selected is the same as what is already in use for the primary management console (MC 1).

  6. Use the customization worksheets provided by the customer to perform the management console customization tasks in Table 2. Additional guidance is available through the IBM DS8870 Introduction and Planning Guide.

    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
    2. Click Change Date and Time.
    3. Click Customize Console Date and Time tab.
    4. In the Clock field, ensure that UTC is selected.
    5. In the Time field, enter the local time.
    6. In the Date field, set the current date.
    7. In the Time Zone field, choose a location that has the same time zone and daylight saving settings as the storage facility location.
      Note: The date, time, and time zone that you select will be used later by an automated process to update those settings in the storage facility. You must set the time zone before you continue with the installation.
    8. Click OK to save any changed settings.
    9. From the panel, "Please reboot the HMC", click OK, but do not reboot until directed later in this procedure.

    1. Which management console are you checking/updating the NTP settings for?
      • Primary HMC (MC1), go to step 6.b.
      • Secondary HMC (MC2), go to step 6.e.
        Note: If you are installing the second storage facility in this storage complex, the internal management console is a secondary HMC.
    2. Does the customer want to use an external NTP server?
      • Yes, go to step 6.c.
      • No, go to step 6.d.
    3. The customer wants to use an external NTP server to update time on the primary HMC.
      1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
      2. Click Change Date and Time.
      3. Click NTP Configuration tab.
      4. Ensure the Enable NTP service on this HMC checkbox has a checkmark (enabled).
      5. Observe the Currently defined time servers in NTP configuration file: table.
      6. Remove any time server information that no longer applies. This includes 172.16.x.x and/or 172.17.x.x, if present. Select the servers and then click Remove NTP Server.
      7. Click Add NTP Server to add NTP servers specified in the customer configuration worksheet. Ensure that the NTP version is correct for each time server.
      8. Click OK and then go to the HMC network settings row in this table.
    4. The customer does not want to use an external NTP server to update time on the primary HMC.
      1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
      2. Click Change Date and Time.
      3. Click NTP Configuration tab.
      4. Ensure the Enable NTP service on this HMC checkbox has a checkmark (enabled).
      5. Click OK and then go to the HMC network settings row in this table.
    5. The secondary HMC must not use an external NTP server. It updates the time/date from the primary HMC.
      1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
      2. Click Change Date and Time.
      3. Click NTP Configuration tab.
      4. Ensure the Enable NTP service on this HMC checkbox has a checkmark (enabled).
      5. Click OK and then go to the HMC network settings row in this table.

    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
    2. Click Change Network Settings.
    3. Click the Identification tab
    4. Set the Console or host name, and Domain name per the worksheets.
    5. Click the LAN Adapters tab.
    6. Select eth2, click Details.
    7. Click the Basic Settings tab.
    8. Under Local Area Network Information
      1. Select the correct media speed in the Media Speed (ethernet) setting.
    9. Under DHCP Server
      1. Do not select (enable) the Enable DHCP server check box.
    10. Under IPv4 Address, set the IP address and DHCP setting from the worksheets.
      1. If a TCP/IP interface address is specified, select the Specify an IP address radio button and enter the interface address and network mask.
      2. If a TCP/IP interface address is not specified, select the Obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP) radio button.
    11. Click the IPv6 Settings tab.
    12. Configure the IPv6 customer network connection from the worksheets.
      1. Set the Autoconfig Options and Static IP Addresses
    13. Click OK to save the settings and return to the Customize Network Settings screen.
    14. Click on the Name Services tab and configure the customer's DNS from the worksheets.
      1. Select the Use DHCP DNS Settings check box only if the IPV4 Address, Obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP) radio button is selected for the LAN adapter.
      2. Select the DNS enabled check box and add each DNS and Domain name suffix only if the customer has DNS servers specified.
    15. Click on the Routing tab and configure the customer's gateway from the worksheets.
      1. Do not add a new route.
      2. Type in the default gateway address.
      3. Set the gateway device to eth2.
      4. If the Enable 'routed' check box is present, ensure that it is not selected.
      5. Start of changeNetwork configuration is completed. Do not click OK now. Go to the next step.End of change
  7. If an Update the HMC certificate window opens, click Yes. Click OK to restart the console application.
  8. After you set the options listed in Table 2 the HMC should reboot. If it does not reboot, logoff and restart the management console by performing the following steps:
    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management.
    2. In the right work area, go to the Operations section and click Shut Down or Restart. The Shutdown or Restart window opens.
    3. Select Restart HMC. Click OK.
  9. If the keyboard layout configuration window opens (as shown below), type 2 and press Enter. 
    If you are using a non English US keyboard, you can choose to change
your keyboard layout configuration.  You can make your selection by pressing a
number key then press enter. If you don't press any key within 30 seconds,
this program will terminate automatically.
  1 -- Do not change keyboard layout and run this program again on the next
       system boot.
  2 -- Do not change keyboard layout and do not run this program again on
       the next system boot.
  3 -- Change to a new keyboard layout.

  Your selection is:
  10. If the change locale screen is displayed, you will have 20 seconds to make a selection. Select the second option, "Exit now and don't prompt for locale again". 
    You can change the locale now in order to run the HMC in a 
different locale. If you do not make a selection in 20 seconds, 
the dialog exits. Enter your selection.

  11. Wait for the management console logon panel to display and then log in.
