Routing the mainline power cables

About this task

Attention: YOU MUST USE ONLY MODEL 961, 96E MAINLINE POWER CABLES.
Prior model mainline power cables can damage the 961, 96E DC-UPS even though the cables may look identical.

Procedure

  1. Do not connect the storage facility mainline power cables to customer power until instructed in a later installation section.
  2. Was the rack ordered with a top exit line cord feature?
    • Yes, go to step 8.
    • No, go to step 3.
  3. The mainline power cable that connects to upper DC-UPS (Un-E1) Callout label 1 is longer than the mainline power cable that connects to lower DC-UPS (Un-E2) Callout label 2. See Figure 1. Use the cable label and part number (P/N) to identify the longer cable.

  4. If you are installing Rack-2, remove the tailgate frame bracket.
    1. Remove the two screws  2  as shown in Figure 2.
    2. Loosen but do not remove the two top screws  1 .
    3. Slide the bracket out. This allows you access to the tailgate cable retention hardware when you install cables later in this installation.

  5. If you are installing Rack-3 or Rack-4, remove the tailgate plate. See Figure 3.
    1. Remove the two left screws  1 .
    2. Loosen, but do not remove, the two rear screws  2 .
    3. Remove the tailgate plate  3 .

  6. Route but DO NOT CONNECT the mainline power cables to the DC-UPS in the racks being installed. See Figure 1.
    1. Route the longer mainline power cable up through the tailgate but DO NOT connect it to the upper DC-UPS Callout label 1. Ensure that it stays fully to the left so it does not block access to the lower DC-UPS.
    2. Route the shorter mainline power cable up through the tailgate but DO NOT connect it to the lower DC-UPS Callout label 2.
    Notes:
    • If this is on a raised floor, route the cables down through the floor cutout and near the customer power connectors.
    • If this is not on a raised floor, route the cables underneath the frame behind the rear caster so they exit to the side. The cables must not exit the rack in the front or rear service areas.
  7. Go to Determining mainline power cable type (plug-in or wired).
  8. For the top exit line cord features, the mainline power cable that connects to DC-UPS (lower) Callout label 2 is longer than the mainline power cable that connects to DC-UPS (upper) Callout label 1. See Figure 1. Use the cable label and part number (P/N) to identify the longer cable.
    CAUTION:
    Do not connect the storage facility mainline power cables to customer power until instructed to do so.

  9. Ensure the PDUs Callout label 4 are in the open position. See Figure 1.
  10. Remove the top exit cover plate.
    1. Remove the four screws that secure the cover plate to the top of the rack. Remove the cover plate. See Figure 4.
    2. Reinstall the screw Callout label 1 nearest the rear of the rack. See Figure 4. Save the remaining screws to install the clamp housing.
    3. Store the cover plate in the document enclosure at the upper front left of the rack.

  11. Route but DO NOT CONNECT the mainline power cables. See Figure 5.
    1. Route the longer mainline power cable down through the opening but DO NOT connect it to the lower DC-UPS Callout label 2. Ensure it stays fully to the left to allow service access to the upper DC-UPS.
    2. Route the shorter mainline power cable down through the top opening but DO NOT connect it to the upper DC-UPS Callout label 1.

  12. Install the top exit mainline cable clamp housing.
    1. Remove the adjustable clamp bracket Callout label 2 from the top exit line mainline cable housing Callout label 1.
    2. Position the housing around the two cables and secure to the rack using the three screws removed in a prior step.
    3. Install the adjustable clamp bracket into the housing. Tighten it enough to prevent the cables from slipping, but do not over tighten. See Figure 6.

  13. Go to Determining mainline power cable type (plug-in or wired).
