MAP6540 Keyboard/display problem

Use this procedure to resolve problems with the keyboard or display.

MAP6540 Section-1

Procedure

Find the management console hardware that you have.
1. xSeries 335, 336, or 3550, go to step 2.
2. ThinkPad laptop. To isolate and repair the keyboard or display problem, exit this MAP and refer to the appropriate maintenance manual for the management console server. The manual is on the IBM® DS8000® series Service Documents CDROM:

Do you have a problem with the keyboard or pointing device?
- Yes, go to MAP6540 Section-2.
- No, go to the next step.

Use Table 1 to determine the problem and action.

Procedure

Is the management console unresponsive to keyboard or pointing device input? For example, characters do not appear when typed or the cursor does not move.
- Yes, go to the next step.
- No, there does not seem to be a keyboard/pointing device problem. If the problem is intermittent, then order and replace the keyboard/pointing device and go to step 5. Otherwise, return to the procedure that sent you here.
At the rear of the management console, verify that the cables from the keyboard/pointing device are properly connected to the cable from the system unit and that the keyboard/display cable is securely connected to the system unit. Did you resolve the problem?
- Yes, this is the end of the procedure.
- No, go to the next step.
Do you have a spare keyboard or mouse available to verify that the system unit is not at fault? Any PC keyboard or mouse with the same connectors will be OK.
- Yes, go to the next step.
- No, order and replace the keyboard/pointing device and go to step 5.
Depending on whether you have a keyboard or pointing device problem, plug in the temporary keyboard or mouse to the connector on the keyboard display cable at the rear.
Note: The keyboard uses the turquoise connector and the pointing device uses the green connector. Is the management console now responsive to keyboard or pointing device input?
- Yes, order and replace the keyboard/pointing device. This is the end of the procedure.
- No, go to step 6.
Is the management console now responsive to keyboard or pointing device input?
- Yes, this is the end of the procedure.
- No, go to step 6.
You are here because you have replaced the keyboard assembly but still have problems. Go to MAP6020 Management console problem determination. Possible FRUs are:
- Cable - keyboard/pointing device connectors to rear of management console.
- For xSeries management consoles, management console system planar.
- Management console software problem.

Use the monitor's self-test feature to check whether it is functioning properly.

About this task

If your monitor and computer system are properly connected but the monitor screen remains dark and the power indicator is blinking, run the monitor self-test by performing the following steps.

Procedure

Turn off both your computer system and monitor.
Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer system.
Turn on the monitor. If the monitor is functioning properly, you will see message No Input Signal. Check connection. This message also displays during normal operation if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged.
Turn off your monitor and reconnect the video cable. Turn on both your computer system and the monitor. If your monitor screen remains blank after using the previous procedures, check your video controller and computer system because your monitor is functioning properly.

When you open the On-Screen Menu, make adjustments and then leave the adjustment window for 3 seconds. These changes are automatically saved in a user area in the monitor.

Procedure

User areas are reserved according to the signal frequency from your computer system. The monitor can save adjustments for up to five user modes. It has 12 factory preset or preload modes, one for each signal frequency as listed in MAP6540 Section-7. If you have made no adjustments, the On-Screen Menu disappears and the monitor does not save anything. To exit without saving the changes that you have, press the EXIT button before the 2 seconds lapse.

The features described here can be accessed quickly, at the touch of one button. Once you finish making adjustments to a feature, press the EXIT button to switch off the menu, or simply allow the On-Screen Menu to time out and disappear automatically.

Auto adjustment

Even though your computer system can recognize your new monitor, the auto adjustment function will optimize the display settings for use with your computer system.

Procedure

To activate the automatic screen adjustments for your monitor, press the AUTO button as described in MAP6540 Section-8. The automatic adjustment display appears and the slidebar moves to indicate progress during the auto adjustment procedure.

Notes:

For Auto Adjustment to function correctly, the monitor must display a full screen, colored image such as the Windows desktop.
Even though Auto Adjustment sets most image adjustments automatically, distortions may remain depending on the video board performance. After using Auto Adjustment, it is recommended that you perfect the image by using the On-Screen Menu functions.

Brightness

Use the brightness button to adjust the brightness of the monitor's display.

Procedure

With the menu off, push the +- or -+ button to display the brightness screen, as described in MAP6540 Section-8.
Push the -+ button to increase the brightness; push the +- button to decrease the brightness.

Use the following sections to access and adjust the On-Screen menu system.

Accessing the menu system

Procedure

With the On-Screen Menu off, press the MENU button, as described in MAP6540 Section-8. This action opens and displays the main function menu.
Use the +- and -+ buttons to move between the function icons. As you move from one icon to another, the function name changes to reflect the function or group of functions represented by that icon. See Table 2 to view a complete list of all the functions available for the monitor.
To activate the highlighted function, push the MENU once and then use the +- and -+ buttons to move to sub-menus, or according to the indicators on the menu, to make your changes.
After you select a function, use the +- and -+ buttons to make the adjustments. The setting sidebar moves and the numeric value indicator changes to reflect your adjustments.
Note: The numeric value indicator is provided as a point of reference only and does not reflect any measurable value.
To select another function, press the EXIT button once or twice to return to the main menu. To exit from the On-Screen Menu, press the EXIT one to three times.

On-screen menu functions and adjustments

Procedure

Use Table 2 for a description of the icons.

If the signal from the monitor equals the standard signal mode, the screen is adjusted automatically.

Procedure

If the signal from the monitor does not equal to the standard signal mode, adjust the mode by referring to the videocard user guide because the screen might not display or only the power LED might be on. For the display modes listed below, the screen image has been optimized during manufacture. Table 5 shows the preset timing modes.

Procedure

Adjust the characteristics of the display image by using the control buttons on the front of the monitor.

While you use these buttons, an On-screen Menu system shows you the numeric values of the various parameters.

MAP6540 Section-9

The monitor has a built-in power management system called PowerSaver. This saves energy by switching your monitor into a low-power mode when it has not been used for a certain amount of time. The available modes are "Normal Operation," "Standby," "Sleep," and "Deep Sleep."

Procedure

PowerSaver operates with a VESA DPMS compliant video card installed in your computer system. Use a software utility installed on your computer system to set up this feature. See Table 7 for information about power-saving modes.
