MAP4065 Restoring VPD after replacing the service processor

If you replace the service processor in the CEC enclosure, you must manually restore the vital product data (VPD) settings. Use this MAP to restore the settings.

Procedure

  1. Determine the displayed state of the CEC enclosure being repaired.
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Server View.
    2. From the right work area, observe the text in the Status column.
    Is the CEC enclosure in recovery state?
  2. Recover the partition data from the copy kept on the HMC hard drive.
    1. Select the server that is in Recovery state.
    2. From the bottom Task area, click Configuration > Manage Partition Data > Restore. The Profile Data Restore window opens.
    3. Select a profile backup file and then select a restore option.
    4. This command might return an error, HSCL251D HSCL119B The restore profile data operation failed. Try again. If so, ignore this error and click OK.
      Note: Even if the command returns an error, the CEC enclosure state will be changed from Recovery to Initializing to Recovery to Standby. You might have to wait a few minutes for the state to become Standby.
  3. When the CEC enclosure state that is displayed has changed to Standby, power it off:
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Server View.
    2. From the right work area, select the appropriate CEC enclosure.
    3. From the bottom Task area, click Service Utilities > Storage System Power Control.
    4. The System Power Control window opens. Click Power Off System.
  4. When the power off is complete, the CEC enclosure state will be displayed as Power Off.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the service processor ASM interface from the HMC using the user ID celogin and the password FipSce.
  2. You must manually restore/verify the VPD card settings using the following steps. This will ensure there are no undetected functional problems after the repair action is complete. Invalid or incorrect VPD settings can prevent the CEC enclosure from powering up or can cause functional problems. Not all invalid or incorrect VPD settings can be detected by the repair verify process.
  3. From the ASMI navigation, select System Configuration, then select the menu option listed in the first column of Table 1.

  4. Determine if the Logical Memory Block Size (LMB Size) can be displayed using the ASMI menu. See Table 2.

    From the ASMI navigation, select Performance Setup, then select the menu option listed in the first column of Table 2.

    Note: If you change this field to "16," ensure you click Save Settings.
    Is the LMB Size displayed?
    • Yes, go to step 9.
    • No, go to the next step.
      Notes:
      1. The value displayed in the Automatic field can be different from the Setting field, but that is acceptable for this step.
      2. If this is your second time through the No answer, stop and call the next level of support.
  5. Determine if the server state is Power Off.
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Server View.
    2. From the right work area, observe the Status column. Is the displayed state Power Off?
      • Yes, go to step 7.
      • No, go to the next step.
  6. Change the server state to Power Off:
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Server View.
    2. From the right work area, select the appropriate CEC enclosure.
    3. From the bottom Task area, click Service Utilities > Storage System Power Control.
    4. The System Power Control window opens. Click Power Off System.
      Was the Power Off operation successful?
      • Yes, go to next step.
      • No, retry the power off operation until it is successful, or call the next level of support.
    5. Observe the status of the server. Wait for the server state to be Power Off, and then go to the next step.
  7. Change the server state to Standby:
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Server View.
    2. From the right work area, select the appropriate CEC enclosure.
    3. From the bottom Task area, click Service Utilities > Storage System Power Control.
    4. The System Power Control window opens. Click Power On System to Standby.
      Was the Power On to Standby operation successful?
      • Yes, go to next step
      • No, retry the power off operation until it is successful.
    5. Observe the status of the server. Wait for the server state to be Standby, and then go to the next step.
  8. Change the server state back to Power Off (use the procedure in step 6) and then return to step 4.
  9. Is the displayed LMB Size Setting equal to 16?
    Note: The value displayed in the Automatic field can be ignored. The Setting field must be 16.
    • Yes, go to next step.
    • No, change the setting to 16, and then go to the next step.
  10. Did you change any of the settings using the ASMI menu options?
    • Yes, the Service Processor might reboot at this point. Wait until the Service Processor returns to PowerOff state before continuing with the next step.
    • No, go to the next step.
  11. Close this window, then return to the HMC repair process screen that sent you here and click Next to continue.
