MAP2470 Powering off and on the storage facility from
the management
console
Use this MAP for instructions on how to power off and power
on a storage facility using
the management
console.
MAP2470 Section-1 Power off or power on the storage facility
MAP2470 Section-2 Power off the storage facility
Procedure
- Ensure that the Local/Remote switch that is located on the local remote or System z® local remote switch card is set to
Remote. For Model 941, see Figure 1. For Model
951 or Model 961, see Figure 2.

- Power off the storage facility.
- From the navigation area, click .
- From the bottom Task area, click . The Power Control window
opens.
Figure 3. Window:
Power Control
- In the upper left,
ensure that the Current Remote Power Control Mode is
set to Manual.
Note: If the mode
is not set to Manual, select Manual
Power Mode from the Power Control Modes section.
- In the Change Storage Facility Power State section,
click Power OFF Storage Facility, and then
click OK.
- Click OK to confirm the update
for the Power Control Settings.
The storage facility will
now begin the power off sequence.
- Wait a maximum of 10 minutes for the storage facility power
off sequence to complete.
The sequence is complete when the storage enclosures/DDMs are off, and the green LED is slow
flashing on both CEC enclosure control panels.
Did the storage facility power
off?
- Yes, go to step 5.
- No, go to the next step.
- The storage facility has
not powered off after waiting 10 minutes.
- Wait a maximum of 30 minutes and then contact your next
level of support.
Notes: - If the power-off sequence encountered a problem, it can take up to 90 minutes for a successful
power-off.
- If the storage facility did
not power off at all, it may be possible to check for and repair any
open serviceable events related to rack power or the CEC enclosures.
- DO NOT force the power off by using the red UEPO switch
or by any other method. If you force the power off, you will need
to contact your next level of support to help you recover the storage facility.
- CPD or complete power down of the storage facility is a state where the mainline power cables
might be disconnected after the customer switched off his or her mainline power circuit breakers. Do
you need to do a complete power down (CPD) of the storage facility?
- Yes, go to the next step.
- No, exit this MAP.
- Shut down the
management console as follows:
- From the navigation area, click HMC
Management.
- In the right work area, go to the Operations section
and click Shut Down or Restart. The Shutdown
or Restart window opens.
- Select Shutdown HMC, then click OK.
- Wait for the HMC to
power off then go to the next step.
- Do you need to remove all customer power from
this storage facility?
- Yes, go to the next step.
- No, exit this procedure.
- Is the
storage facility a 242x model 961?
- Yes, go to step 12.
- No, go to step 9.
- At the rear of
each rack in the storage facility, switch
off the mainline power CB00
(Figure 4) on both primary power
supplies (PPS). Figure 4. Rear view of PPS showing CB00
- Verify that all input power has been removed from each
rack. At the front of both PPSs in each rack, ensure the
AC INPUT GOOD LED indicator is off. Note: If the LED is lit, CB00 is not switched off.
In Figure 5,
the Model 941/94E is shown; the Model 951/95E is similar.Figure 5. LEDs on the PPS (front)
- Go to step 14.
- At the rear
of each rack in the storage facility, set the main line switch CB1
(Figure 6) to Off (down) on both DC-UPS. Figure 6. DC-UPS DC supply unit (DSU)
- Verify
that all input power has been removed from each rack. At the rear
of both DC-UPSs
in each rack, ensure the
LOCAL AC (input) LED indicator is
off. See Figure 6. Note: If
the LED is lit, CB1 is not switched off.
- If you plan to disconnect
the mainline power cords, ensure the customer has switched off the
circuit breaker for each mainline power cord to be disconnected.
MAP2470 Section-3 Power on the storage facility
Procedure
- Is the
storage facility a 242x model 961?
- Yes, go to step 4.
- No, go to step 2.
- Observe the front of each rack in the
storage facility. Are the LEDs for AC INPUT GOOD
and UEPO LOOP GOOD
on each PPS lit solid? See Figure 5. - Yes, go to the next step.
- No. A rack can power on successfully with only one of the
two redundant PPSs operational. However, it is best to have both PPSs
in each rack operational before you power on the storage facility.
Do the following:
- At the rear of the rack, ensure that the mainline power cables
are connected to the PPS and also to the customer power source.
- Ensure that the customer circuit breaker for each mainline power
cable source is set to on.
- At the rear of each PPS, ensure that each mainline power
CB00 is switched to on (up).
- If you cannot find the problem and only one PPS in the rack is
not operational, wait and fix it after the storage facility is powered
on. There should be an open serviceable event for the problem.
- Go to step 5.
- Observe
the rear of each rack in the storage facility. Is the LOCAL AC (input)
LED indicator on each DC-UPS lit solid?
See Figure 6. - Yes, go to the next step.
- No. A rack can power on successfully with only one of the
two redundant DC-UPSs
operational. However, it is best to have both DC-UPSs in each
rack operational before you power on the storage facility. Do the
following:
- At the rear of the rack, ensure that the mainline power cables
are connected to the DC-UPSs and also
to the customer power source.
- Ensure that the customer circuit breaker for each mainline power
cable source is set to on.
- At the rear of each DC-UPS, ensure
that each main line switch CB1 is switched to on (up).
- If you cannot find the problem and only one DC-UPS in the
rack is not operational, wait and fix it after the storage facility
is powered on. There should be an open serviceable event for the problem.
- Ensure that the management
console has powered
on. If not, you will need to manually power it on.
- Power on the storage facility.
- From the navigation area, click .
- From the bottom Task area, click . The Power Control window
opens.
Figure 7. Window:
Power Control
- At the top of the screen, ensure that the Current
Power Control Mode is set to Manual.
Note: If the mode is not set to Manual,
select Manual Power Mode from the Power
Control Modes section.
- In the Change Storage Facility Power State section,
click Power ON Storage Facility, and then click OK.
- Click OK to confirm the update
for the Power Control Settings.
The storage facility will now begin the power-on
sequence.
The power-on process can take up to 30 minutes for the LPARs to be ready for customer use.
- Remember to use the Power Control Modes to restore the
mode back to its original setting.
