Before you begin

CAUTION:
If there are rows of racks next to each other, ensure each row is installed in the proper orientation to create a hot aisle and a cold aisle. A cold aisle means the racks on both sides of the aisle intake cool air from the aisle. A hot aisle means the racks on both sides of the aisle discharge warm air into the aisle. If the orientation is not correct, a rack would intake air from the warm exhaust of the racks on the other side of the aisle. This could cause overheating even though the room temperature is within specifications.

Procedure

  1. Temperature is measured by multiple storage components, including Fan Sense Cards, DDMs, PSUs, and FCICs. One or more serviceable events will be generated when an over-temperature is reported by two or more components within a subsystem boundary. Specific boundaries are listed for reference in Table 1.

  2. If this over-temperature condition occurred during or just after initial rack install, check that the cooling requirements have been met.
    • On a raised floor, the proper number and placement of perforated floor tiles.
    • On a non-raised floor, adequate air flow to each rack.
    • The air temperature at the rack cooling intake vents must be less than 32 degrees C (90 degrees F).

  3. Is the room temperature near or greater than 32 degrees C (90 degrees F) right now?
    Note: If you are not sure, obtain a thermometer and measure the air temperature.
    • Yes, go to step 4.
    • No, go to step 5.
  4. The racks do not automatically power off for an over-temperature condition.
    • If the room temperature cannot be cooled very quickly, work with the customer to power off the racks. They can be powered on after normal room temperatures are restored.
    • Cancel all serviceable events related to the over-temperature condition.
  5. Determine if the room temperature was too hot at the time the serviceable event was created but then later was restored to normal.
    • Ask the customer if there is a room temperature recording device that shows the temperature history.
    • Ask the customer if there were any other room cooling issues, repairs, or partial power outages at the time of the serviceable event.
    Was there a problem with the room temperature being too hot?
    • Yes, ensure the room temperature is normal now, then cancel the related serviceable events and exit this MAP.
    • No, the room temperature has been normal; the problem might be within the rack. Go to step 6.
  6. Display all open serviceable events.
    Are there any other serviceable events for rack power or cooling?
    • Yes, go to step 7.
    • No, only this rack is reporting a problem. Return to the serviceable event that sent you here and replace the FRUs in the FRU list. If there are no additional FRUs, contact your next level of support.
  7. Determine if the FRUs for the related serviceable events might cause this over-temperature condition.
    Do one of the following:
    • Cancel the serviceable event that sent you here and then repair the related rack power or cooling serviceable event. If the over-temperature condition still exists, the repair will fail or a new serviceable event will be opened.
    • Ignore the other serviceable event for now and go to step 8. After the over-temperature condition is repaired, repair the other serviceable events.
  8. Consider the following:
    • Ensure the cooling intake vents on the rack that is reporting the problem are not blocked or restricted.
    • Open the front and rear covers and look for any restrictions.
    • Reach over the front top of the rack to ensure the cooling fans above the storage enclosures are blowing air out of the top of the rack (Models 941, 94E only).
    • Ensure storage enclosure fillers are securely snapped or latched into place in all empty storage enclosure locations.
  9. Is there more than one rack in this storage facility?
    • Yes, go to step 10.
    • No, go to step 11.
  10. Are there similar serviceable events for the other racks in this storage facility?
    • Yes, it is not likely that this is caused by a hardware fault internal to a rack. For more than one rack to report an over-temperature condition, it normally would require the room temperature to be too hot. Contact your next level of support.
    • No, only one rack is reporting the over-temperature condition. Go to step 11.
  11. Return to the serviceable event that sent you here and replace the FRUs in the FRU list.
    If there are no additional FRUs, contact your next level of support.
