DS8000 Service Documentation Version 7.5

Positioning Rack-1

Before you begin

If you have questions about floor loading and service clearances of the racks, review the installation site requirements in the IBM® DS8870 Introduction and Planning Guide which is available on the IBM DS8000 series Service Documents CDROM.

About this task

DANGER
HEAVY EQUIPMENT -- PERSONAL INJURY OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGE MAY RESULT IF MISHANDLED (D006)

Procedure

  1. Verify that the new location meets the necessary service clearances for the storage facility, which include any attached racks. See the installation site requirements for the DS8000® in IBM DS8870 Introduction and Planning Guide.
  2. Do you have more than one rack to install?
    • Yes, continue at the next step.
    • No, go to step 4.
  3. You must ensure that each expansion rack is installed to the base rack (Rack-1) that it was originally configured with.
Note: If expansion racks for two storage facilities are accidentally intermixed, a successful installation will not be possible.
    • Each rack has a small label Callout label 1 with its rack S/N above the front or rear cover latch release. See Figure 1.
    • Each rack has a large label Callout label 2 with its rack number (position in the storage facility) and the S/N of the Rack-1 it must be installed to. The label is to the left of the UEPO switch inside the front cover. See Figure 1.
Note: Rack-1 large label is normally left blank.

  4. Move Rack-1 to its permanent location. If installing on a raised floor, position the rack so the rear tailgate, especially the rightmost opening for the mainline power cables, is directly over the floor tile cutouts.
Note: If the storage facility is configured for overhead cable management (top exit), floor tiles with cutouts might not be required. Refer to Checking customer preparations.
  5. Install the wheel chocks Callout label 1 (located in the ship group) on all four casters. See Figure 2.
    Figure 2. Wheel (wedge) chocks
    Wedge chocks
  6. Open the front cover.
  7. Open the left rear cover (customer access area).
Note: On some models, the rack machine type, model, serial (MTMS) label is located on the left rear cover, just above the door latch. If the left rear cover is removed from the rack, ensure it is reinstalled on the correct rack. If this is not done, the incorrect MTMS will be displayed on the exterior of the rack, which could result in maintenance errors or other issues. If a reference is needed, the correct rack MTMS is also shown on the "1S" label, affixed to the upper left inside wall of both the front and rear of the rack.
  8. Open the right rear cover (trained service personnel access area only). Use a 3 mm hex wrench to remove the two screws Callout label 1. See Figure 3.
Note: The screws must be reinstalled when the cover is closed to prevent customer access.

  9. To access the rear of the PPS, unfasten Callout label 1 and then rotate the upper and lower sets of power distribution units (PDUs) away from the rear of the PPS, as shown in Figure 4.

  10. Remove the tailgate frame bracket. Remove two screws Callout label 2 as shown in Figure 5. Loosen but do not remove the two top screws Callout label 1. Slide the bracket out. This allows you access to the tailgate cable retention hardware when you install cables later in this installation.

  11. Does the rack have an upper "funnel" bracket  2  at the rear upper left of the rack? See Figure 6.
    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, go to step 15.
Figure 6. Removing top tailgate cover plate
    Removing top tailgate cover plate
  12. Looking down at the top left rear of the rack, inspect the top tailgate cover plate screw  3 . See Figure 6.
    • If the screw is installed from the top (only screw head is visible), go to the next step.
    • If the screw is installed from inside the rack, (only threaded end is visible) to go step 14.
  13. The screw is installed from the top of the rack. Install the screw from inside the rack and then install the top tailgate.
    1. Remove and discard the nut  1  securing the upper "funnel" bracket  2  of the host cable channel. See Figure 6.
    2. Remove the long screw  3  from the top of the rack.
    3. Install the long screw  3  from inside the rack. The threaded end of the screw extends out the top of the rack.
    4. At the top of the rack, remove the three screws that secure the cover plate to the top of the rack. Remove the cover plate.
    5. Store the cover plate in the document enclosure at the front upper left of the rack.
    6. Position the tailgate assembly over the opening at the top of the rack. See Figure 7. Secure the assembly with the three screws that were removed in step d.
    7. Go to step 15.
      Figure 7. Top tailgate
      Top tailgate
  14. The screw is installed from inside the rack. Install the top tailgate.
    1. Looking down at the top of the rack, remove the three screws around the opening for the funnel bracket. See Figure 6. The rack was shipped with the cover plate already removed and stored in the document enclosure at the front upper left of the rack.
    2. Position the tailgate assembly over the opening at the top of the rack. See Figure 7. Secure with the three screws that were just removed.
    3. Go to the next step.
  15. Remove the tailgate frame bracket for Rack-3 (if present) and Rack-4 (if present) only if they do not have the" top exit" cable feature for the mainline power cables.
  16. Continue at the next section.
