Installing and testing the Rack-2 storage enclosures

You are here to install one or more pairs of storage enclosures in Rack-2.

Procedure

  1. Determine the LIC bundle VRMF of this storage facility. Perform the following steps from the existing management console.
    1. From the navigation area, click Updates.
    2. From the right work area, select the radio button for the existing storage facility. The bottom Task area displays a list of tasks you can select.
    3. Click Display Storage Facility Code Levels. An Action Panel displays the code levels.
    4. Find Package: HMC, MTMS: XXXXXXX*XXXXXXX and find the Bundle VRMF: xx.xx.xx.xx beneath it. There might be more than one bundle under install history; select the top line which is the latest bundle.
    5. Write down the LIC bundle VRMF.
  2. Begin the installation of the Rack-2 storage enclosures at the HMC.
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility.
    2. From the bottom Task area, click MES Install/Remove > Install Storage Enclosure or DDMs.
    3. The Install window opens and asks if you were sent from the installation or MES instructions. Click Yes.
    4. The Single Choice Message Box window opens and prompts "Select the component or enclosure you would like to install." Select Install Storage Enclosures and then click Submit.
    5. A subsequent Single Choice Message Box window opens that prompts "Select the Storage Facility Image you want to assign the storage enclosures to."
    6. Select the storage facility image and then click Submit.
  3. Storage enclosures on multiple DA pairs can be installed at the same time. Complete the following steps:
    1. If the informational DaPairsPanel displays, click OK.
    2. The Select Device Adapter Pair window displays a list of Rack-2 DA pairs available for additional Rack-2 storage enclosures on the selected storage facility image.
    3. At the front of Rack-2 find all the storage enclosures that you have not yet cabled and installed.
    4. Use Figure 1 to determine their Rack-2 storage enclosure location codes (ex: R2-S11).
Figure 1. Storage enclosures in expansion rack with I/O enclosures
Storage expansion rack with I/O enclosures
    5. Use Table 1 to determine the DA Pair IDs the storage enclosures connect to.

For simplicity the following table lists only the front storage enclosures. However, for each front storage enclosure there is a corresponding rear storage enclosure that creates the storage enclosure pair. For example, R2-S11 is paired with R2-S21.

Table 1. Rack-2 storage enclosure pairs and DA pair IDs
If Rack-2 storage enclosure: And Rack-2 storage enclosure: You are installing x pair(s) of storage enclosures: They connect to Rack -2 DA Pair ID
      R2-S11 has DDMs R2-S12 has DDMs 2 pairs 6
R2-S11 has DDMs R2-S12 is empty 1 pair
R2-S11 is empty R2-S12 is empty 0 pair

      R2-S13 has DDMs R2-S14 has DDMs 2 pairs 4
R2-S13 has DDMs R2-S14 is empty 1 pair
R2-S13 is empty R2-S14 is empty 0 pair

      R2-S15 has DDMs R2-S16 has DDMs 2 pairs 7
R2-S15 has DDMs R2-S16 is empty 1 pair
R2-S15 is empty R2-S16 is empty 0 pair

      R2-S17 has DDMs R2-S18 has DDMs 2 pairs 5
R2-S17 has DDMs R2-S18 is empty 1 pair
R2-S17 is empty R2-S18 is empty 0 pair
    6. At the HMC screen, select all the DA Pair IDs that will have storage enclosures installed and click OK.
    7. The Select Storage Enclosure Pairs window displays the status of the storage enclosure positions for each DA pair ID.
    8. Multi-select each storage enclosure position you will install. Each of those positions should display the enclosure status "Available for Install". Then click OK.
Note: If a position to be installed does not display "Available for Install," it may already be installed. If it is not already installed, stop and contact next level of support.
    9. An Action Panel window displays the physical location codes of the storage enclosures to be connected. If the location codes are correct, click OK.
Note: Each pair (for example, R2-S13 R2-S23) is one storage enclosure at the front of the rack and one storage enclosure at the rear of the rack.
    10. Wait for the TextandNextButtonBean window to display.
    11. The HMC displays the Rack-2 storage enclosure physical location codes to be installed.
    12. DO NOT click Next until directed in a later step.
    13. Using the HMC-displayed physical location code, refer to Figure 1 to determine the location of each storage enclosure being installed in the rack.
    14. Go to the next step.
  4. For each Rack-2 storage enclosure physical location code displayed by the HMC, ensure the four FC-AL cables are still connected to the T1 & T2 connectors (labeled J1 & J2 on the sheet metal) on both FCIC cards in the Rack-2 storage enclosure being installed. See Figure 2.
Note: These cable ends should not have been disconnected as part of this installation procedure.

  5. For each Rack-2 physical location code displayed by the HMC, find the location code in the first column of either Table 2 or Table 3.

  7. This step routes and connects the short FC-AL cables that go between two Rack-2 storage enclosures (one below the other).
    1. Use Table 3 columns two and three to determine the Rack-2 storage enclosure locations to connect the FC-AL cables to.
    2. Connect the four blue FC-AL cables. See Figure 1 and Figure 4.
    3. Go to the next step.
Figure 4. Storage enclosure FC-IC card connector locations
Storage enclosure FC-IC card connector locations
  8. Have you connected the FC-AL cables to all the storage enclosures that are selected for installation?
    • Yes, return to the HMC and click Next. Then return here and go to next step.
    • No, return to step 5.
  9. The HMC automatically initializes the storage facility image the storage enclosures are being installed to.
Note: The times listed are for a fully populated rack.
The HMC displays some or all of the following messages:

Task in Progress...Powering on the FRU(s)
    Verification Progress...Verification progress:
Task in Progress...Activating the system (maximum of 40 minutes)
    Working...
    Task in Progress...Verifying system
Verification Progress...Verification progress: (maximum of 35 minutes)
Task in Progress...Activating applications(s) (maximum of 45 minutes)

When the HMC is finished, it displays:

    Service action is complete
    Service action is ending...

When the HMC directs you back to the installation instructions, go to the next step.

  10. Have all the storage enclosures with DDMs in Rack-2 been installed?
    • Yes, to go the next step.
    • No, return to step 1 to install the remaining storage enclosures.
  11. Display and repair any related open serviceable events.
  12. View the storage facility state, refer to MAP1100 View storage facility state (end of call).
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility.
    2. From the bottom Task area, click Service Utilities > View Storage Facility State. A window displays the status (passed/failed) of 25 or more system checks. Figure 5 is an example.
    3. All status fields should display as PASSED except for the following.
      • If the Resources State result is "Failed", select it and then click Details. If the DDM state is "5", this is normal and you should go to the next step.
      • If other checks are failed, select it and then click Details. They should be fixed before going to the next step. If needed, call the next level of support.
Note: If the Large File Transfer (the tenth System Check Type status from the top) displays as FAILED, the remaining System Check Types below it cannot be displayed. Contact the next level of support.
