MAP6F30 Accessing the ASMI using an ASCII terminal emulator

Only if directed by your next level of support, it is possible to use a standard laptop with terminal emulator software installed to access the CEC enclosure ASMI menus.

About this task

Note: The laptop referred to in the following steps is a laptop provided by the service representative. It must not be a laptop that is already an HMC management console in the storage complex being serviced.

Procedure

Ensure the CEC enclosure that you are connecting to is in power off state and the LPARs are powered off. Power off state is indicated by the CEC enclosure control panel green indicator in the lower left corner that is slow blinking.
Note: If the CEC enclosure is not in power off state, return to MAP6F00 Accessing the ASMI and select a different method.

Set up the laptop terminal emulator software (for example, NetTerm) with the following settings:

terminal type = VT30
port          = Serial port 1 for many laptops
baud rate     = 38,400 (edf to confirm
data bits     = 8
parity        = none
stop bits     = 1
DTR/DSR       = off
RTS/CTS       = off
Xon/Xoff      = off
control       = direct line (for example: no
                modem between the serial ports
                on the laptop and service
                processor).

Connect the laptop serial port to the service processor serial port. You must use a "direct connect" serial cable that is wired to cross over the data and send and receive signals. The direct serial cable will have 9-pin D-shell female connectors on both ends. Normal serial cables have a male connector on one end, a female connector on the other end, and pass the data signals without crossing them.
Note: An example of a direct connect serial cable that can be used is the serial cable used to connect a laptop to a storage facility cluster for service login.
Use the terminal emulator connect function.
When the login display appears, log in with either the "general " or "admin" login ID.
