MAP6F20 Accessing the ASMI using a web browser

Complete the tasks to set up the web browser for direct or remote access to the ASMI.

About this task

The Web interface to the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI) is accessible through Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape 7.1, or Opera 7.23 running on a PC or mobile computer connected to the service processor. The Web interface is available during all phases of system operation including the initial program load (IPL) and run time. However, some of the menu options in the Web interface are unavailable during IPL or run time to prevent usage or ownership conflicts if the system resources are in use during that phase.

MAP6F20 Section-1

Procedure

  1. Ensure the laptop has a minimum level of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape 7.1.
  2. Determine the IP address of the service processor by using one of the following methods:
    • Using the Restricted Shell command
      1. Log on to the HMC.
      2. Right-click an area of the desktop outside of the HMC window.
      3. Select Terminals then rshterm.
      4. Type lssyscfg -r sys -F serial_num ipaddr
      5. Note the IP address for the managed system that you want to access.
    • Using the Network Topology Tool
      1. Log on to the HMC.
      2. Go to, Storage Facility Management > storage facility > Server View > server > Hardware Information > View Hardware Topology.
      3. Click on the desired Service Process (FSP) in the Current or Save view.
      4. The IP address is displayed in the panel on the right.
  3. Ensure that the laptop Ethernet port network settings are configured for DHCP. Do not set a static IP address.
  4. Based on the IP address for the service processor that is obtained in step 2, use Table 1 to determine the network and Ethernet switch to be used for the connection.
Table 1. Network and Ethernet switch connection
    Network Ethernet switch
    Black - 172.16.xxx.xxx1 (eth0) SW1 (upper switch)
    Gray - 172.17.xxx.xxx1 (eth3) SW2 (lower switch)
    Notes:
    1. This is the default address range. The network might be using one of three optional address ranges. To determine the range that the network is using, see MAP7005 Determining which private network address range is selected.
  5. Connect an Ethernet cable from the laptop to any available port on the Ethernet switch that was determined in step 4. The switch can be located in any storage facility within the storage complex.
  6. Open a DOS prompt on the laptop and type ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to reset the existing DHCP address and request a new one from the management console.
  7. Open the web browser on the laptop.
  8. Type the IP address of the service processor card (FSP) Ethernet port in the browser address field in the form https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
  9. When the login display appears, log in with a user ID of celogin and password of FipSce.
  10. For the ASMI menu options, see MAP1221 ASMI menu structure.
