MAP2250 Local/remote switch setting is different between RPC cards

The management console has received an interrupt from an RPC card that shows the Local/Remote Switch setting has changed and the switch setting is now being reported as different between the two RPCs.

About this task

The actual failure could be one of the following:
  • Scenario 1: The switch setting has been changed, but one of the RPC cards is not reporting the change.
  • Scenario 2: The switch setting has not been changed, but one of the RPC cards is falsely reporting a change.
Note: When only one RPC card reports a change to the switch setting, the reported change may be true or false. Use this MAP to determine the switch setting.

MAP2250 Section-1

Procedure

  1. Determine and record which RPC card is fenced. Observe the green LEDs Callout label 1 and Callout label 3 near the top of the RPC card (at the rear of the rack). The RPC with the LED not lit is fenced. If no RPC card is fenced, then use the SRC that sent you here in the first column of Table Table 1.
Figure 1. LEDs on the RPC cards
    LEDs on the RPC cards
  2. Record the physical setting of the Local/Remote switch on the LR Switch card (or optional ZLR switch card). From now on these cards will be referred to as the LR/ZLR switch card.
  3. Display and record the setting of the Local/Remote switch as reported by the management console.
  4. Use the results from steps 1 to 3 and find the row in Table 1 that matches your condition. Then use the last column to continue the repair.

MAP2250 Section-2

Procedure

RPC-1 is incorrectly reporting the Local/Remote switch setting. The switch setting is Local and the last setting the management console detected was Local so the failure has caused RPC-1 to incorrectly report the switch setting as Remote. Use the FRU replace option to replace the following FRUs in the order listed:
  1. RPC-1 card (cpRPC0)
  2. Cable between RPC-1 and LR/ZLR switch card cable (PSCBL0E)
  3. LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard)

MAP2250 Section-3

Procedure

  1. RPC-2 is incorrectly reporting the switch state. The switch setting has been changed to remote but RPC-2 is not reporting the switch change. Do the following:
    1. Change the Local/Remote switch to Local.
    2. Use the utility option to quiesce and then resume RPC-1.
    3. Use the FRU replace option to replace the following FRUs in the order listed. For each FRU being replaced, when fix verification has completed successfully, change the Local/Remote switch setting to Remote.
      1. RPC-2 card (cpRPC1)
      2. Cable between RPC-2 and the LR/ZLR switch card (PSCBL0E)
      3. LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard)
  2. Observe the RPC-1 green LED. Is the green LED lit?
    • Yes, both RPCs are operational, the failure has been repaired. Exit this MAP and close the serviceable event.
    • No, the original failure has reoccurred. Go to MAP2250 Section-5 step 1 and replace the next FRU in the list.

MAP2250 Section-4

Procedure

  1. RPC-2 is incorrectly reporting the Local/Remote switch setting. The management console is still reporting the switch setting is Remote but the actual switch setting is Local. That indicates the switch setting was changed from Remote to Local and RPC-2 is still reporting a Remote switch setting. Do the following actions to further isolate the cause of the failure:
    1. Change the Local/Remote switch to Remote. This will make the switch setting, as detected by the two RPCs, agree.
    2. Use the utilities to quiesce and then resume RPC-1 so that the fence is reset and it becomes operational (the green LED is lit).
    3. Use the utilities to quiesce RPC-2.
    4. Change the Local/Remote switch setting back to Local.
    5. Disconnect the cable at J204 on RPC-2. With the cable disconnected the signal from the switch will be reporting the switch is in the Local position.
    6. Use the utilities to resume RPC-2.
  2. Observe the RPC-2 green LED. Is the green LED lit?
    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, RPC-2 is failing and has been fenced again. Use the replace FRU option to replace RPC-2.
  3. Do the following:
    1. Disconnect the cable at J2 on the LR/ZLR switch card.
    2. Reconnect the cable at J204 on RPC-2.
    3. Go to the next step.
  4. Observe the RPC-2 green LED. Is the green LED lit?
    • Yes, RPC-2 is not fenced, the LR/ZLR card is failing. Use the replace FRU option to replace the LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard).
    • No, RPC-2 is fenced again and the cable between RPC-2 and the LR/ZLR switch card is failing. Use the replace FRU option to replace the cable PSCBL1F.

MAP2250 Section-5

Procedure

  1. RPC-1 is incorrectly reporting a switch setting change to Remote. The switch setting is Remote and the last setting the management console detected was Remote so the failure has caused RPC-1 to incorrectly report the switch setting as Local. The cable between RPC-1 card and the LR/ZLR switch card may be loose or disconnected. Do the following:
    1. Inspect and correct any problems for the cable connector J1 on the LR/ZLR switch card.
    2. Inspect and correct any problems for the cable at connector at J204 on the RPC-1 card. Was a cable problem found and corrected?
      • Yes, use the utilities to quiesce and resume the RPC-1 card (cpRPC0). If the resume is successful, the failure has been repaired. Exit this MAP and close the serviceable event. If the resume fails, go to the next step.
      • No, go to the next step.
  2. Use the replace FRU option to replace RPC-1 card (cpRPC0). Was the FRU verification successful?
    • Yes, exit this MAP and close the original serviceable event.
    • No, go to the next step.
  3. Use the replace FRU option to replace the cable between RPC-1 and the LR/ZLR switch card (PSCBL1E). Was the FRU verification successful?
    • Yes, exit this MAP and close the original serviceable event.
    • No, go to the next step.
  4. Change the Local/Remote switch to the Local setting.
  5. Use the replace FRU option to replace the LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard). When the LR/ZLR switch card replacement is complete, return the Local/Remote switch setting to the Remote setting. When the repair has been completed, exit this MAP and close the serviceable event.

MAP2250 Section-6

Procedure

RPC-2 is incorrectly reporting the Local/Remote switch setting. The switch setting is Local and the last setting the management console detected was Local so the failure has caused RPC-2 to incorrectly report the switch setting as Remote. Use the FRU replace option to replace the following FRUs in the order listed until the failure is resolved:
  1. RPC-2 card (cpRPC1)
  2. Cable between RPC-2 and LR/ZLR switch card cable (PSCBL0F)
  3. LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard)

MAP2250 Section-7

Procedure

  1. RPC-1 is incorrectly reporting the switch state. The switch setting has been changed to remote but RPC-1 is not reporting the switch change. Do the following:
    1. Change the Local/Remote switch to Local
    2. Use the utility option to quiesce and then resume RPC-2
    3. Use the replace FRU option to replace each of the FRUs in the order listed. For each FRU being replaced, when fix verification has completed successful, change the Local/Remote switch setting to Remote.
      • RPC-1 card (cpRPC0)
      • Cable between RPC-1 and the LR/ZLR switch card (PSCBL0E)
      • LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard)
  2. Observe the RPC-1 green LED. Is the green LED lit?
    • Yes, both RPCs are operational, the failure has been repaired. Exit this MAP and close the serviceable event.
    • No, the original failure has reoccurred. Return to MAP2250 Section-5 step 1 and replace the next FRU in the list.

MAP2250 Section-8

Procedure

  1. RPC-1 is incorrectly reporting the Local/Remote switch setting. The management console is still reporting the switch setting is Remote but the actual switch setting is Local. That indicates the switch setting was changed from Remote to Local and RPC-1 is still reporting a Remote switch setting. Do the following action to further isolate the cause of the failure:
    1. Change the Local/Remote switch to Remote. This will make the switch setting, as detected by the two RPCs, agree.
    2. Use the utilities to quiesce and then resume RPC-2 so that the fence is reset and it becomes operational (the green LED is lit).
    3. Use the utilities to quiesce RPC-1.
    4. Change the Local/Remote switch setting back to Local.
    5. Disconnect the cable at J204 on RPC-1. With the cable disconnected, the signal from the switch will be reporting the switch is in the Local position.
    6. Use the utilities to resume RPC-1.
  2. Observe the RPC-1 green LED. Is the green LED lit?
    • Yes, go to the next step.
    • No, RPC-1 is failing and has been fenced again. Use the replace FRU option to replace RPC-1.
  3. Complete the following steps:
    1. Disconnect the cable at J2 on the LR/ZLR switch card.
    2. Reconnect the cable at J204 on RPC-1.
    3. Go to the next step.
  4. Observe the RPC-2 green LED. Is the green LED lit?
    • Yes, RPC-1 is not fenced, the LR/ZLR switch card is failing. Use the replace FRU option to replace the LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard).
    • No, RPC-1 is fenced again and the cable between RPC-1 and the LR/ZLR switch card is failing. Use the replace FRU option to replace the cable PSCBL1E.

MAP2250 Section-9

Procedure

  1. The RPC-2 (C2) card is incorrectly reporting a switch setting change to Remote. The switch setting is Remote and the last setting the management console detected was Remote so the failure has caused the RPC-2 (C2) card to incorrectly report the switch setting as Local. The cable between the RPC-2 (C2) card and the LR/ZLR switch card may be loose or disconnected.
    Do the following:
    1. Inspect and correct any problems for the cable connector J1 on the LR/ZLR switch card.
    2. Inspect and correct any problems for the cable at connector at J204 on the RPC-2 (C2) card.
Was a cable problem found and corrected?
      • Yes, go to the next step.
      • No, go to the next step.
  2. Use the utility option to System Level Deactivate and then System Level Activate the RPC-1 (C1) card.
Storage Facility Management > 242x-xxx-sssssss > Service Utilities > Activate/Deactivate Resources > Show Rack Enclosures > (select rack) > U242x.xxx.sssssss-C1 (Rack power Control (RPC) Card, State: available > System Level Deactivate
    • If the System Level Activate is successful, the failure has been repaired. Exit this MAP and close the serviceable event.
    • If the System Level Activate fails, go to the next step.
  3. Use the replace FRU option to replace the RPC-2 card. (Refer to MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.)
    Was the FRU verification successful?
    • Yes, exit this MAP and close the original serviceable event.
    • No, go to the next step.
  4. Use the replace FRU option to replace the cable between RPC-2 and the LR/ZLR switch card. (Refer to MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.) (The cable is not listed as a FRU; instead select the RPC-2 (C2) card when directed to replace it, replace the cable.)
    Was the FRU verification successful?
    • Yes, exit this MAP and close the original serviceable event.
    • No, go to the next step.
  5. Change the Local/Remote switch to the Local setting.
  6. Use the replace FRU option to replace the LR/ZLR switch card (cpLRcard). When the LR/ZLR switch card replacement is complete, return the Local/Remote switch setting to the Remote setting. When the repair has been completed, exit this MAP and close the serviceable event.
