Testing management console communications

Before you begin

Perform these steps if you installed a storage facility that contains a management console. Otherwise, continue with Completing the installation.

Procedure

  1. Are you installing a storage facility that contains a management console?
  2. Test the service communication methods.
Table 1. Tests for management console communications
    Communication method How to test
Remote support - Modem Select Service Management > Manage Outbound Connectivity > Configure > Local Modem tab > Test
    Remote support - VPN
    1. Select Service Management > Manage Outbound Connectivity > Configure > Internet VPN tab > Test
    2. The Test Internet VPN window opens. Click Start to begin the test.
      1. Wait for the test status to display.
      2. If the test is successful, click Cancel to close the window.
      3. If the test fails, MAP1301 Isolating Call Home/remote services failure.
Note: If this test identifies incorrect network settings that require a management console restart, do not restart until the storage facility verification and DDM certification has completed.
    Call Home
    1. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management.
    2. From the right work area, select the check box for the appropriate storage facility. The bottom Task area displays a list of tasks you can select.
    3. From the bottom Task area, click Service Utilities > Test Problem Notification (PMH, SNMP, Email). The Test Problem Notification (PMH, SNMP, Email) window opens and lists the storage facility and its expansion racks, if any.
    4. Perform the test on each of the listed racks:
      1. Select the first rack in the list and click Test Callhome.
      2. When you are prompted to generate a serviceable event with reference code BEB20010, click Yes.
      3. When the message TestPMR Successful is displayed, make note of the rack serial number and problem ID, then click OK.
      4. Repeat the test for the remaining racks.
      5. Check open SRC BEB20010s and confirm a PMH number has been returned from RETAIN. This return may take a while.
(Select Service Management > Manage Serviceable Events)
Note: You have previously verified that this storage facility is registered in Retain earlier in this installation. If the test fails, go to MAP1301 Isolating Call Home/remote services failure.
    Remote Access
Note: Follow your geographical guidelines to determine if this test is needed.
    1. Select Service Management > Manage Inbound Connectivity.
    2. For Unattended Session, select the Allow unattended sessions check box.
    3. For Duration, select Temporary, then click OK.
    4. Ask the support center to test remote access.
    5. After the test is complete, restore the Inbound Connectivity settings to the customer choice on the worksheets.
  3. Test the customer communication methods.
Table 2. Test customer communication methods
    Communication method How to test
Customer e-mail notification Select Service Management > Connectivity > Manage Serviceable Event Notification > Email tab > Test Email. Ask the customer if the e-mail was received.
Note: If the test fails, go to MAP1310 Isolating e-mail notification problems.
Customer connection to DS8000 Storage Manager server in the management console Ask the customer to test the access of the application or method that they will use to connect to the DS8000 Storage Manager in the management console.
  4. Send the first call home heartbeat.
    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management.
    2. In the right work area, go to the Storage Server HMC Tasks section and click View/Change Heartbeat Configuration.
    3. Ensure the Send Heartbeat field is set to 7 days.
    4. Click Send Heartbeat Now.
    5. The Send an Instant Heartbeat window opens, click Yes.
    6. The Heartbeat status window displays for less than one minute.
    7. When the Successful window displays, follow the directions to ensure the heartbeat was sent then click OK to exit.
Note: The management console heartbeat function verifies that the HMC continues to be available for call home and remote service. It will use the VPN connection if configured, or the modem if VPN is not configured. The service representative sets the frequency (1, 7, 14, or 28 days) selected by the customer. The recommended setting is 7 days. The heartbeat function uses the HMC to create a serviceable event (SE) with SRC BEF00012. The SE contains the frequency setting, and is sent to IBM® with the normal SE call home function. If IBM does not receive these SEs at the recommended frequency, a service action to determine the cause can be initiated by next level of support.
  5. Do you have an external management console to be installed?
    • Yes, continue with the hardcopy MES instructions "Add an external HMC server" and then return here and go to the next step.
Note: If two service representatives are servicing the machine, one can perform this procedure while the other performs the procedure in the next step.
    • No, go to the next step.
  6. Go to the next section.
